The light novel is brutal than the anime.
Yoshino got burned to a crisp by Metatron.
After fought with Ellen, Elliot is badly injured (bleeding a lot) despite being the victor. His armor is broken, the weapon also halfly broken.
Kurumi coughed up blood after Mio came out of her body and didn't fight back against Mio.
After Kurumi's death, Shido was about to make an expression toward her death but it got overshadowed by his past memory and shocked about what just happened making him unable to do anything in front of Mio.
In the season 4, Mukuro asked Shido is he really can protected the spirits after he sealed their power and making them exposed to DEM threat. This question causing Shido to have existential crisis and started to doubted about himself. To add more, Mukuro locking everyone memory about Shido. Shido almost losing his hope in saving the spirits but luckily Tenka and Moegami came in clutch.
Back in season 1, Kurumi's Zaphkiel got blasted by Kotori and half of it got destroyed. While in the light novel, Kurumi's left arm also got caught in that blast, Kurumi lose her left arm and it even explained how the look of it, the left body flesh got burned like medium rare meat but with blood and you can even see the bone.
Remember when Shido want to save Yoshino and went inside the barrier that she created ? Kotori stated that if Shido went inside that barrier he will feel like getting shot by shotgun to the point even the Camael regenerative power will have a problem to heal Shido. After Shido reached Yoshino and fell down, the light novel describe him as "raw meat".
Fact : everytime Shido use his spirits power, his body will feel a huge amount of pain. Camael may be good on healing but everytime when it heal Shido, Shido will suffer and had to endure the hotness of the Camael fire. Camael fire temperature is still same as the actual fire and look what the actual fire does to human body.
Shido also use Gabriel to ease the pain of his body when he use the spirits power, it won't do much but still tolerable
