Season 1: the principal is a massive jerk
Season 2: deep down he is guilty because he thinks he raised the students to be good and not strong which is why he felt guilty because he thinks his ways of teaching played a role in his student's death
Principal Asano taught his 1st student being a "good student" the same with the other 2.
The student followed his teacher's life lesson advice to him, because he acknowledged and respected him. So that he became the good student Principal Asano wants him to be.
It backfired, the student itself had an unfortunate fate, and at the end of it all, he still treasured what his "Teacher" wants him to be. A "Good Student" Good person at the very end of his life. Then the Teacher "Asano" himself blamed himself for it, that he taught "him" wrong or forgotten the important thing to teach.
